The Case of the Soul Exchange: How Master Mei Rescued a Woman Possessed by an Evil Sorcerer in Guangdong
Master Mei once shared a remarkable case she handled in Guangdong Province.
The victim was an elderly woman who, after accidentally slipping by a village pond one day, seemed to lose her soul. When she returned home, she locked herself inside her room and refused to step out into the sunlight. Her family could only slide her meals under the door — she would eat only after they had left. She wouldn’t meet anyone, and she only came out late at night to bathe, never stepping outdoors. It was as if she had become a completely different person.
This strange state lasted for more than ten years. Her relatives had invited several spiritual masters to help, but none succeeded. Eventually, through a friend’s introduction, they came to know Master Mei, who agreed to take on the case after sensing that the woman was kindhearted.
Her family asked how many sessions it would take to heal her, explaining that she wouldn’t even open the door for her own family, let alone strangers. Master Mei calmly replied, “If she’s truly able to speak with me in person, I can solve it in one visit. And she will walk out of that room on her own.”
Skeptical but desperate, the family agreed.
Upon investigation, Master Mei discovered that the woman had been possessed by the spirit of an evil sorcerer. During his lifetime, this man had committed many wrongdoings and feared that, after death, the underworld would arrest him to face his karmic retribution. Before dying, he instructed his family to perform a forbidden ritual to “exchange souls and borrow fortune.”
The ritual required finding someone virtuous and blessed — someone with abundant good karma — to serve as his vessel. The sorcerer’s followers secretly placed cursed talismans near the pond where the woman passed daily. When she slipped and fell, her shock weakened her spiritual defenses, allowing the sorcerer’s soul to enter her body. Her own soul, frightened and disoriented, was sealed inside a small urn using powerful spells.
This way, when the underworld messengers came to seize his soul, they couldn’t find him — and he could continue absorbing the woman’s life energy and enjoying her accumulated merit.
By the time Master Mei intervened, the woman was already in her seventies. Having lived more than a decade trapped in darkness — barely seeing daylight — her health was failing rapidly. Master Mei said that if they had waited even two or three more months, she would have died, and the evil sorcerer would have sought a new host, likely among her own family.
During the ritual, Master Mei invoked Guanyin Bodhisattva, who expelled the sorcerer’s spirit and ordered divine soldiers to restrain him. When the evil spirit was driven out, the woman’s body trembled violently several times. Master Mei then retrieved the woman’s true soul, which appeared faint and nearly dissolved, and asked Guanyin to restore it to her body. Gradually, her complexion turned from pale to rosy again.
Because she had been controlled by an evil presence for so long, she was terrified and refused to speak. Master Mei prayed for Guanyin Bodhisattva to comfort her — as the woman deeply believed in the Guanyin worshipped in her village.
To ease her fear, Master Mei allowed the woman to witness the spiritual trial — where Zhong Kui, the Demon Queller, devoured the evil sorcerer, and his accomplices were sentenced to punishment in the underworld.
Her family later said that, at that moment, the woman’s eyes suddenly opened wide as if she could see everything clearly.
Then came the miracle.
Her family asked, “You haven’t gone outside in over ten years. Would you like to visit your old home?”
For the first time, she spoke clearly:
“Wherever you want to take me, I’ll go.”
Everyone was stunned and overjoyed. She calmly packed her belongings and walked out of the room by herself — without needing anyone’s support.
A few days later, during the Dragon Boat Festival, she personally visited Master Mei to express her gratitude. Those who witnessed the entire event were deeply moved. If not for the many witnesses at the scene, no one would have believed such a miraculous recovery could truly happen.
Four years later, her family informed Master Mei that the elderly woman had peacefully passed away — just as Master Mei had foretold — with no illness and her spirit finally at peace.
